Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The objectives of the expediton are as follows: - to study large-scale energy exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere in the Southern Ocean and to obtain quantitative estimates of the ocean's contribution to the energy balance in the Southern Polar region; - to study a structure and dynamics of the Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) and the Antarctic polar front as related to atmospheric processes; - to study meridional circulation and circulation systems to the north and to the south of ACC and their contribution to the mass and energy balance of the ACC zonal flow; - to study mechanisms of the formation of Antarctic bottom and intermediate waters and their contribution to global circulation; - to study a contribution of cryosphere to atmospheric circulation variations in the Southern Hemosphere
