County Administrative Board of Stockholm, Information Office for the Baltic Proper:
"Report on the Conditions of the Coastal and Offshore Waters of the Baltic Proper"
REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES AT THE INFORMATION OFFICE FOR THE BALTIC PROPER DURING 2002
Dense accumulations of cyanobacteria covered large parts of the Baltic proper already
in the beginning of July, among other things as a result of a long high pressure period.
When that was replaced by a low pressure dominated weather situation in the middle of
the month, the situation improved somewhat. But the accumulations returned and covered
smaller areas well into the middle of August. Minor accumulations occurred during the
autumn and also during wintertime. In the period between Christmas time and the New Year
minor local accumulations occurred in parts of the Stockholm archipelago. Interpretation
of satellite images was again carried out during 2002 with SMHI as provider of
interpreted images. The interpreted images were made available through the Internet.
The oxygen situation in the Baltic Sea bottom waters has been very bad throughout the
entire year. No major inflows of North Sea water took place.
Also this year death among birds, mostly gulls, was observed in unusual numbers. The
reason for it is still not known. Some seals, killed by PDV-virus, were found in German
and Danish areas in the Baltic. Also at Måkläppen, south of Falsterbo in
south-western Sweden, some seals were found that had been killed by the same virus.
Still, no major outbreak of the disease was found in the Baltic Sea.
