North Sea


Mean temperatures in July were above-average (17.0 - 18.3 C), with abundant rains ranging from 60 mm (102 %) to 131 mm (158 %). There were few hours of sunshine (147 - 194 hours).
In August, exceptionally heavy rains in south and south-east Germany led to the "flood of the century" at the Elbe and Donau rivers. With monthly totals of 75 to 240 mm, August was much too wet. In the middle of the month, the anticyclone "Hein" brought more than 10 hours of sunshine per day, causing above-average mean temperatures (19.5 - 20.5 C).
In September, the first half of the month had high late-summer temperatures with much sunshine (170 - 190 hours). The second half of the month was under cyclonic influence, which led to cool and variable weather. Monthly rainfall was clearly below the long-term mean.

Water temperatures

The mean water temperatures remained above the climatological values (July: 15.0 C; August: 17.4 C; September: 16.2 C) until October. In September, they reached the highest values on record in the North Sea since 1971.

Baltic Sea


The warm weather, with low precipitation, continued in July (17.0 - 18.7 C). Up to 180 hours of sunshine were recorded. Water temperatures rose from 15 C to 19 - 20 C.
August was very warm (19.5 - 20.5 C) and very wet. In southeast Germany, excessive rainfall in the first half of August led to the "flood of the century" at the river Elbe. The second half of the month was under anticyclonic influence and very sunny.
The first half of September was dry and very sunny, with high late-summer temperatures (mean: 15 - 16.5 C). In the last third of the month, cyclonic troughs brought unsettled, cool weather. Strong local rains or thunderstorms accounted for large regional differences in the distribution of rain, with monthly precipitation ranging from 15 to 66 mm.

Water temperatures

Temperatures increased further in June (1 - 3 K above average). Above-average temperatures were also recorded in the following months. The temperature gradient between surface and bottom water in the outer coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in August was 3.5 - 7.3 K. In September, the coastal water temperatures exceeded the reference series by up to 4 K.


In July, the surface salinity (6.6 - 12.3) increased and was almost 1 higher than in the preceding month. In the bottom water, salinities were regionally different (7.1 - 24.5). In August, normal surface salinities (5.4 - 14.1) were measured almost everywhere. Different values were still found in the bottom water. A very strong haline stratification with a gradient of 12 was encountered in the Mecklenburg Bight.

Water levels

Above-average values were also measured in July. In August, the monthly mean values in the Kiel and Mecklenburg Bights exceeded the values of the reference series by up to 9 cm, whereas in the region of Usedom they were below the long-term mean. There were no high or low water events. Water levels in September and October were 7 cm above normal.
