Additional forcing data

Besides the meteorological forecasts additional data are needed to complete the forcing of the BSH ocean models, e.g., information on tides, external surges and riverine freshwater input to the sea. Information on tides are based on 14 tidal constituents which are prescribed at the open boundary of the North Sea models. External surges computed by a 2D ocean forecast model for the North-East-Atlantic (, 11 km grid spacing) are added to the tidal forcing.
The riverine freshwater input to North- and Baltic Sea is realised by taking the inflow of the largest 80 rivers into account. River data are compiled from different sources: river gauge measurements for the German rivers from PegelOnline, hydrological forecasts from the HBV model running at SMHI and some climatological mean values.
